Departing Punta Arenas, we sailed north for the next 36 hours through the Chilian Fjords. In almost predictable fashion, the weather changed every 45 minutes from overcast and rain to bright sunshine! Periodically we were treated to a fabulous rainbow.
The fjords are long deep narrow bodies of water with steep rocky mountain walls on either side. Birds, sea animals, and vegetation are the only living organisms to be seen. Quit unexpectantly we spotted a lighthouse near a sharp bend in the fjord. Even it was unmanned. We have two more days of travel before again seeing civilization. Just imagine how isolated the early explorers must have felt going months (or in some cases years) without coming in contact with people!
