Day Thirty-three - Whale Sighting

This morning there was lot of activity on the deck.  Someone had reported seeing a whale and a crowd gathered.

Binoculars in hand, two-hundred passengers scanned the ocean hoping for a view.  The onboard biologist indicated it could be a blue whale, the largest of the whale species.

Finally a confirmed sighting!  It was a blue whale and there were as many as three within 100 yards of the ship.

A mature blue whale can reach 100 feet in length and weigh 180 tons.  We felt quite privileged to see this giant, the largest animal ever on earth!  The biologist related that only 1 percent of earth's population has ever seen a whale and only a small percentage of them have seen a blue whale.  Another item we can check off our bucket list!
